Is it a bad thing, as Placher records, that teachers keep giving assignments that dumb down the curriculum every year a little more? The assertion may be true, but it is not unique to theological education. My wife, who taught in the public schools, often expressed the same lament. I find equally disturbing a report that suggested that even in the most elite colleges and universities there is a near-total absence of intellectual discussion outside the classroom.
